What is Shepherd’s Home? The Shepherd’s Home is a
Christian Non-Governmental Organisation that seeks to reach out to the disabled, street children and the needy children. Fully convinced that the government cannot solve the problem of the street children and the needy
children all on its own, the Shepherd’s Home is being born to supplement the efforts of the government. Shepherd’s Home was founded about ten years ago by Thomas Okyere who felt responsible for the poor
people of Ghana. Thomas Okyere started to work with poor people during his National Service in
Barekumah in the Ashanti Region in 1983. There, he realised the reality of poverty and started helping the local community in a practical way. This experience helped him understand the rural exodus fuelling the growing
problems of homelessness in Ghanaian towns. He started to help the needy who had come from the Central Region of Ghana to look for greener pastures in Kumasi. He gave them shelter in his mother’s house
and helped them get income to fend for themselves and to become financially independent.
Young people migrate more and more to the Ghanaian towns. In order to help address this problem he founded the Non Governmental Organisation Shepherd’s Home.
Presently Shepherd’s Home is located in Accra and comprises of the children’s home that is the Shepherd’s Home, the Vineyard Football Club, the street church in Okaishie, human and rural development. It also has
different youth groups in different parts of Accra. In October 2003 the NGO Shepherd’s Home got registered with the department of social welfare. Without
the help given by Ghanaian partners and partners from abroad the organisation couldn’t have come this far. Thanks very much to friends and supporters, home and abroad. |
