Rural development

We have a dream: and this is to help serve the rural communities of Ghana in a very practicable way that we can. In word and in kind.

We are trying to help two small villages by names Agona Asafo in the central region and Manchie in the Greater Accra Region a bit off the Accra Nsawam road, around midie.

Manchie embraces around 500 to 600 inhabitants. Most of the people are mainly farmers who grow cassava, tomatoes, pepper and little bit of potatoes. Some of the cassava gets sold to merchants who come to buy them cheap from the farmers themselves.  Some of these cassava are also turned into the making of Gari ( also a staple food of Ghanaians. The only cement building in this village is the school block.

The people of Manchie originally come from the Volta-Region. The local language they speak is mostly Ewe, Ga and a little Akan. They don’t own the land on which they are living. Only few royal landlords own the lands. The land on which they live and farm has to be rented from the royal landlords. The people in Manchie are poor. Their income depends very much on the weather. If it does not rain well in a year, then it becomes very difficult for the farmers to survive. They suffer a lot and are getting poorer and poorer. In 2005, we were able to give credit to the farmers to help them in their farming. If the weather favours them, the farmers are getting a good harvest and therefore they will be able to pay the credits back and still be able to take care of their families and even farm again. We are very much prepared to repeat this.

In this village, we have been able to start a fellowship, where people meet to share about the word of God sing and pray.  Manchie believes very much in gods and hence it is being said that dogs are not allowed in this village.  A dog can never be seen in this village.

Although there exists a Primary school since 1988 in Manchie they don’t have enough space to teach all the children. Some of the children are being taught under trees. A Junior Secondary School does not exist at Manchie. Children have to walk eight miles in and out daily to the next village which has a Junior Secondary School(JSS). Sometimes, because the children have also to help their parents on the farm, they are not allowed to visit the JSS.

Shepherd’s Home supports families already who are not able to pay the school fees of their children. The Orphans are also being cared for.

In the future we want to expand the Primary school and later we would also like to start a Junior Secondary School at Manchie so that the children can join the school although they have to help their parents on the field. School in Manchie

In 2004 we were able to bring two boys of the ages of 10 and 14 years who were wandering in Accra and trying to find their feet to a floorless city back to their village called Agona. They now stay in the house of their family members. Shepherd’s Home pays the school fees and is looking after them.

When we went to the village it became clear to us why a boy of 10 years will come into the city to work.  It was all for the love for his mother.  The mother was very sick and had grown very lean to the bone.  In fact all her bones could be seen.  This poor boy had no one to care for him so had to get to town and try selling in between vehicles.  What he got, he would then go back and give the dying mother sometheing buy food and try buying medicine.  He did this togther with his other brother till we met them and reasoned out with the brother.  We then took care of the mother and very soon she passed away.  Now the boy is in happy in school in the village agona.

In Agona, there are more young people who should get help to go to school or learn a trade to make them stay in their village. Young people have to get opportunities and hope to manage their lives themselves in the future.

A church has also begun at Agona and Charles and the Locals in this village with pastor Baiden are taking care of it.  We hope this will grow and grow to help us all the nation and also the whole world at large.
